Weary Boulder County fire crews are getting a hand from rested southern Colorado firefighters--the Colorado Springs Fire Department sent three wildland fire companies to Boulder County before dawn Tuesday to lend a hand.
The Fourmile Canyon Fire broke out Monday morning and exploded into an inferno that tore through miles of forests, canyons and homes. More than 3,000 residents had to evacuate. Dozens of homes are feared lost. Even firefighters had to keep scrambling from place-to-place to escape the erratic fire.
The flames were driven by 45 mile-per-hour winds, aided by extremely low humidity and fed with dead trees killed by beetles. It was the perfect firestorm.
The flames calmed-down overnight, and were met by an aerial squadron of seven slurry bombers Tuesday morning.
No injuries have been reported.
Several roads are closed in the area and school is canceled for the day.
