Couple wounded in blast also lost home in Black Forest Fire

COLORADO SPRINGS - Two people were taken to the hospital after there was an explosion at their home on the northeast side. Firefighters were called to the home in the 4700 block of Chaparral Rd at 12:03 p.m.

The couple who lived there were alert and walking under their own power when paramedics arrived. Neighbors and others who came to their rescue say it looked as though the woman burns on her chest and shoulder.

The force of the blast was strong enough to throw the picture windows into the front yard, frame and all. Gaping holes were left in the charred walls and the chimney is threatening to fall at any moment.

"The structure itself is incredibly unstable," said Battalion Chief Troy Branham. "We have three out of the four walls that are literally bowed out."

Neighbors David and Karen Sagahon say the couple had recently move in. They were renting the home after losing their own house in the Black Forest Fire over the summer.

Sagahon's dog trainer had just pulled into the neighborhood for an appointment when the blast happened. He and an off-duty firefighter were able to immediately assist the man and woman.

For a moment, Karen said it looked like the fire might spread.

"They had come and said you have to get out of the house and you have to get to the other side of the street because we're trying to save your house as well as the house that's on fire," she said.

Fire investigators are working to determine the exact cause of the blast. The Sagahon's and others remember hearing the man say he thought he'd smelled gas earlier in the day.

Karen is relieved everyone walked away alive.

"The biggest thing is to be thankful that nobody was killed in this incident and that we had neighbors and a community that came together to immediately help those people."
