COLORADO SPRINGS - April is Child Abuse Awareness Month and in El Paso County there has been a sharp drop in child deaths from a record high of 10 in 2011 to just three last year.
Much of that decline is being credited to the work of a task force made up of members of the El Paso County Department of Human Services, the Department of Public Health and Environment, law enforcement, the 4th Judicial District Attorney's Office, local hospital churches and military bases. The task force worked to created public service announcements, and a 30 minute instructional video to reinforce positive parenting education.
"I think it shows that we have made some strides in trying to be proactive in our approach instead of just being reactive," County Commissioner Sallie Clark said during Thursday's Board of County Commissioners Meeting.
The board publicly recognized the task force members today for their hard work with a proclamation of appreciation.
