Council to discuss surveillance cameras in downtown Colorado Springs

The debate over whether to install surveillance cameras in downtown Colorado Springs could come to a head tonight.
The cameras would be installed at various locations throughout an 11 block area downtown, along Tejon and Nevada between Boulder and Rio Grande.
It would cost the city an up-front investment of $188,000 to install the cameras plus annual maintenance of around $25,000.
Proponents say the cameras will enhance safety and security downtown, but opponents say they run the risk of infringing on personal liberties.
The cameras would be able to pan, tilt and zoom. Police Chief Pete Casey says he would be hoping to recruit a legion of volunteers to man the cameras.
