Cost for Black Forest fire investigation climbs

On Tuesday, News 5 learned the independent investigation into the Black Forest fire cost taxpayers $69,407.47. This total is up about $20,000 from last month's estimate and does not include additional costs for the law firm hired to handle media inquiries and open records requests. Lawyers fees totaled more than $47,000.

You may remember, the Black Forest fire board ordered an independent investigation into Chief Harvey following a dispute between Harvey and El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa over time management and allocation of resources.

The 2,000 page independent report ultimately cleared Chief Harvey of any wrongdoing, but has since sparked widespread criticism among residents who question whether the independent audit was necessary.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is still conducting its own criminal investigation into the fire. The sheriff's office has not released any new information on when its investigation will be complete.
