Copper wire theft leaves Springs church in ruins

Copper wire theft is a big problem in Colorado Springs; there have been 53 cases in the last month alone, the year-to-date cost totaling more than $438,000. The latest case, though, is a first- and it's left a local pastor and his churchgoers without a place to worship.

This morning Pastor John Beatty found Chadbourne Community Church trashed, its walls ripped apart...the leftovers of thieves looking for copper wire. Beatty says the criminals got away with everything, but they'll have to answer to a higher authority than the police. "Turn yourself in. You need to do that not only for the purposes of the state but for your own soul. This is a very serious thing to transgress a house of God in this way," Beatty told News 5.

Beatty hopes to have repairs done in time for Sunday service.

Springs police say nobody is safe from metal theft, since these criminals are getting more and more creative. To protect yourself, make sure you light the outside of your house, and park your car in a safe place since copper in car engines is the biggest target right now.
