COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Federal officials have signed final contracts on the Southern Delivery System water project, meaning construction on a 62-mile pipeline that would move water from Pueblo Reservoir to Colorado Springs can move forward.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation manages the reservoir. Bureau spokeswoman Kara Lamb says the agency signed contracts Wednesday with Colorado Springs Utilities, the city of Fountain, Pueblo West
Metropolitan District and the Security Water District.

The Gazette reports the roughly $880 million first phase of the pipeline and reservoir project is on schedule to be delivering water to Colorado Springs, Fountain, Pueblo West and Security by April 2016.

Bonds and water rate hikes are helping to fund the project. Two 12 percent increases in water rates have been approved so far.
