Consultant encourages cooperation on ambulance contract

COLORADO SPRINGS - The message from an industry consultant to members of the Emergency Services Agency board Wednesday is that it will be best for patients if the both city and county can continue to work together as they consider renewing their contract with ambulance provider American Medical Response.

The board hired consultant John Altmann of the Public Safety Research Group to advise them of the changes taking place within the healthcare and ambulance industries. During his presentation, Altmann also gave comparisons how other communities throughout the Southwest are handling issues of medical transport.

In light of changes to reimbursements from Medicaid and Medicare under the new Affordable Care Act, Altmann suggested that the ESA consider modifying their approach to ambulance service.

The board was poised to renew the AMR contract as recently as last month. However, the Colorado Springs Fire Department has held out from voting on the extension as it considers possible in-sourcing of ambulance service. The current contract will expire next year.
