A Pagosa Springs group has secured a conservation easement on a ranch where owners once floated plans to build a private club called Piano Creek Ranch, with ski runs and a golf course.
The Southwest Land Alliance signed a conservation easement Dec. 23 with the McCarthy family, which owns the 2,700-acre East Fork Ranch near Wolf Creek Pass. The family will still own the property, but it won't be developed.
The alliance did not disclose terms of the deal. A family spokesman did not return an e-mail from the Durango Herald seeking comment.
Alliance director Michael Whiting says two more easements will follow.
