Committed youth numbers decrease by close to 50%

Colorado Department of Human Services announced this week its plan to re-align beds within the Department's Division of Youth Corrections (DYC).

The Division's reporting a decrease in its average daily population of committed youth from a height of 1,480 in March of 2006 to a level below 1,000 in August of 2011.

With the drastic fall in numbers the department is planning to close 44 state-operated beds, including the 20currently served by Sol Vista located in Pueblo.

News 5 will be talking with the Director of Children Youth and Families, Julie Krow, which is part of the Colorado Department of Human Services, to learn what's the reason for the dramatic decrease in numbers.
