A simple phone call could help some cancer patients deal with symptoms of pain and depression.
Researchers at the Indiana School of Medicine tested a program that allows cancer patients to dial into an automated monitoring and nurse care manager. Patients were able to quantify their symptoms by pushing a number key -- allowing a nurse to contact those with the most urgent needs.
The system significantly improved pain and depression symptoms in patients in all phases of treatment -- from initial diagnosis to recurrent cancer -- to full remission.
