During the year of economic meltdown since the collapse of Lehman Brothers, Colorado has lost 110,600 jobs, the Colorado Department of Labor & Employment reported Friday. The current statewide unemployment rate is 7.3%. Local numbers are higher--Colorado Springs: 7.6%; Pueblo: 8.0%

The unemployment rate for August is an improvement over July. Donald J. Mares, Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment said, "This improvement is encouraging news for the state. Although we will likely experience some ups and downs over the next several months, employment appears to be stabilizing."

There were fresh layoffs in the construction and manufacturing industries last month, while jobs were created in health care.
