A woman who drowned in a northern Colorado irrigation canal while trying to rescue her dog has been identified as 23-year-old Brittany R. Schult of the Eden Valley area west of Loveland.

The Larimer County coroner ruled Sunday that Schult's death was an accident.

Loveland Fire Rescue officials say Schult went into the fast-moving, 48-degree water Saturday afternoon after the dog either jumped or fell in. The dog later emerged safely. Schult's body was recovered about four hours later, five miles from the point she entered the water.
