Crews are battling a wildfire in northwest Colorado that has grown quickly after being sparked by lightning.

The fire was first reported 10 miles north of Maybell in Moffat County on Wednesday afternoon and spread to about 1,000 acres by nightfall. On Thursday the U.S. Bureau of Land Management estimated that it grown to 6,500 acres, or about 10 square miles, because of erratic winds and dry vegetation.

The BLM says crews worked until 2 a.m. to build fire line and that the fire is now 80 percent contained.

Crews were able to keep a ranch house from burning but an outbuilding was destroyed.

Higher humidity is forecast which should help firefighters.
