Colorado Trooper shot trying to help motorist

DOTSERO, Colo. (AP) - The Colorado State Patrol says a trooper wounded in a shooting on Interstate 70 in western Colorado is being treated for serious injuries.  CSP has identified the trooper as 6-year veteran Trooper Eugene Hofacker.

Garfield County Sheriff Lou Valerio tells KMTS-FM in Glenwood Springs that two troopers were shot at by a motorist they were trying to help in Glenwood Canyon on Thursday morning. The sheriff says one of the troopers returned fire and killed the suspect.

Trooper Hofacker suffered serious blood loss and is being treated at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.

Authorities have not released the names of anyone involved in the shooting.
