Colorado State University's private donations rose 6.6 percent to $58 million the past year, bucking the national trend of declining donations to U.S. public research universities. Colorado State officials say the number of donors increased 17 percent.

The university is in the final two years of its first comprehensive fundraising campaign with a goal of $500 million. So far, $340 million has been raised. University officials say with the decreases in state funding, the school relies more on donors.

The Council for Aid to Education says nationwide, public research universities have seen more than a 13 percent decrease, on average, in private support.
