Colorado Springs Utilities plans a controlled burn on the north slope of Pikes Peak to thin the forest.

The Colorado State Forest Service will carry out the project, which aims to clear underbrush on 115 acres of the city's watershed.

CSU is worried about a destructive wildfire like the ones burning near Boulder and Loveland. Such a fire would lead to erosion and a build-up of sediment in reservoirs.

The controlled burn, set for October, will cost $22,000.
