Colorado Springs proposes tight 2011 budget

Some Colorado Springs recreation and cultural centers kept open this year with private funding could close next year under a city budget proposal.

Interim City Manager Steve Cox says there's been "a positive trend" in sales and use tax revenue the past 10 months, but the economy is still seen as shaky.

He says the proposed $222.5 million general fund budget is conservative and largely maintains current service levels.

The Gazette reports the proposed budget includes $720,000 to mow and maintain medians and $1.22 million to mow and maintain 128 neighborhood parks.

The city has received several complaints about weedy medians and parks and the council dipped into the city's rainy-day fund to boost upkeep.
