Colorado Springs Police Department looking to hire more women

The Colorado Springs Police Department is looking to recruit more women to join their force. This week they started accepting applications for the police academy next year and they're hoping more women will apply.

Lt. Catherine Buckley says police departments should be a reflection of the society that they serve. Ideally, that would mean increasing females to around 50 percent. Buckley says that's simply not feasible for next year, but that their main goal is increasing the number of females by as much as possible.

News 5 asked women on the force what qualities they think it takes for a woman to succeed. Officer Alison Detwiler says it takes good common sense, and the ability to challenge yourself, while Detective Tricia Clippinger says it's all about having a good head on your shoulders and being able to work hard.

After an application is submitted, the department will then do testing and background checks and pick who they think is ideal to join the force.

As of now about 12 percent of the police force is female.
