Colorado Springs Police have just confirmed the 30th Homicide case for Colorado Springs in 2011. The announcement comes after Colorado Spring Police surpassed the record number of 28 with the 29th homicide which raised concerns throughout the city.
The Crimes Against Children began working the case on November 11th following police officers initial response to an apartment complex in the 900 block of Zamora Circle to handle a call for service involving a one year old female, who was unconscious and not breathing. The child was taken to a local hospital suffering from life threatening injuries. An adult later identified as Melissa Alexander was later taken into custody.
The child passed away as a result of her injuries on December 9th and an autopsy conducted by the El Paso County Coroner's Office has determined the child's death to be a homicide. One charge of previous felony Child Abuse has now been amended to a new charge of First Degree Murder.
