Colorado Springs garden center target for thieves

A popular Colorado Springs garden shop was targeted by thieves. Hundreds of dollars in equipment was taken from Rick's Garden Center on W. Uintah St.

The whole thing was caught on tape. Owner Mike Estes says several people came in and distracted workers. Some of them walked out the door, carrying expensive timed-lighting systems.

Estes says the equipment stolen is often used in a medical marijuana growing business. The industry, which has been growing fast in recent years, has provided Estes extra income, like in winter months when sales are generally down. While extra business is positive, Estes says this is an example of the negative side of things from marijuana growers.

"I think most of them are pretty darn good, but there are always a few folks that really have to make it bad for everybody else by shoplifting, breaking into places, doing things like that," Estes says.

If you have any information about this crime, please contact Colorado Springs Police (444-7000) or Rick's Garden Center (632-8491, ask for Mike).
