Colorado's Mark Udall is calling for more research on safety in oil and gas drilling - and he isn't ruling out the need to extend a moratorium on deep-water drilling to study it.

Sen. Udall visited a Denver gas station Monday to announce he'll propose a shift in emphasis for a federal agency that currently researches ultra-deep-water drilling.

Udall says the program is too heavily focused on oil production, not safety. Udall says he supports the current six-month moratorium on deep-water drilling while the massive BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is studied and contained.

Asked whether six months would be enough time to make deepwater drilling safe, Udall did not rule out a longer moratorium.
