New Census Bureau figures show Colorado's poverty rate is about two percentage points lower than the national rate in one of the worst economic years in recent history.

The Census figures released Thursday show that Colorado's poverty rate was 12.3 percent, compared with the nation's rate of 14.3 percent.

That makes Colorado's poverty rate the 31st highest in the country without including the District of Columbia. The Census Bureau figures show Mississippi had the highest poverty rate in the country with 23.1 percent.

The national poverty rate for all ages was the highest since 1994.
