GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP)-The upper section of Rim Rock Drive in the Colorado National Monument will be opened to traffic sooner than expected this winter.

The road through the monument in western Colorado will open to motorized traffic Monday. Plowing is starting about a month earlier than scheduled because of this winter's low snowfall.

The monument near Grand Junction closed about 14 miles of the road to save on maintenance and plowing costs and to give visitors a chance to use the road for cross-country skiing and other activities. There might be temporary closures if the area gets more snow.
