A Colorado Marine has died in Afghanistan. The Defense Department said Friday that 24-year-old Cpl. Larry D. Harris, Jr. of Thornton, Colorado died Thursday while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province.
The military didn't provide any other details about how he died. His death came a day after a four-hour gunbattle that resulted in the capture a key Taliban figure in Afghanistan. The leader was seized and 31 insurgents were killed at a compound in the remote Baghran district in the northern part of Helmand province.
Most of the surprise attacks against the Taliban leadership there are being carried out by U.S. special operations troops.
Harris was assigned to the Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Pendleton, Calif.
