Colorado lawmakers kill ban on officials' mugs

A Senate committee has killed a bill that would have barred elected state officials and their employees from spending public money to promote themselves.

The Senate State, Veterans & Military Affairs Committee rejected the measure, with members saying they saw no sign that the privileges were being abused.

The research arm of the Legislature reported that the state's top elected officials spent hundreds of thousands of dollars promoting themselves and their official duties over the past year putting their pictures and testimonials on everything from calendars to magazine ads.
