EUREKA, Colo. (AP) - San Juan County officials are trying to limit the number of temporary residents at a popular ghost town.

The former town eight miles north of Silverton is becoming a popular camp site, and the county is forcing temporary residents to use a 50-space campground with picnic areas.

The Durango Herald says officials worried there were too many unregulated campsites and fire pits, and too much human waste.

Eureka became a spot on the map in the early 1870s when miners began to pan for gold. The population dwindled after a mill closed in 1939.
