Colorado doctors give free surgeries

Forty-two people without health insurance are going under the knife in Pueblo thanks to some doctors who have volunteered to operate on the uninsured.

Saturday is what southern Colorado doctors call the Day of Surgical Giving. It's where Coloradans without insurance who need surgeries such as gall bladder stones removed can receive the work
free of charge. The patients were already chosen in open screenings held earlier this fall.

The surgeries are performed by volunteer doctors with help from students from Colorado Technical University in Denver. The volunteer doctors also perform free surgeries overseas with two Pueblo-based groups, International Surgical Missions and Health4Haiti.
