DENVER (AP) - Colorado Democrats have unveiled a slate of gun-control measures that include more background checks and ammunition limits, but they won't be suggesting a full ban on assault weapons.
The package outlined Tuesday calls for expanding background checks on sales between private gun owners and banning the sale and ownership of high-capacity magazines.
Democrats didn't propose banning assault weapons. Instead, Democrats want sellers, manufacturers and owners of such firearms to be held liable for damages caused by the weapons.
The Democrats also want to see new requirements for mental health professionals telling authorities about patients who shouldn't have access to guns.
Republicans call the measures extreme and say they would not have prevented mass shootings. Democrats control both chambers of the Legislature, giving them a good chance of passing the bills.
