COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Colorado College men's lacrosse team makes its postseason debut on Wednesday when it travels to Roanoke College for the first round of the 2011 NCAA Championship. Game time will be announced on Monday.
CC, which improved to 15-0 with a 6-5 victory at Whittier College in its regular-season finale on Saturday, earned an automatic berth in the 26-team field by virtue of winning the first-ever Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship.
Roanoke (14-3) defeated Lynchburg, 12-10, on Sunday to win the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship.
While the Tigers are making their first appearance in the Division III playoffs, second-year head coach Guy Van Arsdale is no stranger to the NCAA Tournament. During his 12 seasons as the bench boss at Rochester Institute of Technology, Van Arsdale's teams posted a combined record of 112-54 and made five NCAA tournament appearances, including a berth in the national semifinals in 1999.
Van Arsdale enjoyed a highly-decorated career as a goaltender at Hobart College, where he led the Statesmen to four consecutive national championships (1980-83) while playing for current Georgetown University head coach Dave Urick.
Colorado College is 25-2 in two seasons under Van Arsdale, which includes a 16-1 record on the road. The Tigers won all eight of their away games this season, including victories over Goucher College (11-9) and Swarthmore College (9-8 in overtime) on back-to-back days in mid-March.
The winner of Wednesday's contest advances to the second round on May 14 to face either Gettysburg College or the University of Scranton.
The national quarterfinals will be played on Wednesday, May 18, with the semifinals occurring four days later at campus sites. The Division III national championship game is scheduled for Sunday, May 29, at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md.
