Colorado caucuses begin nomination process

DENVER (AP) - The long slog to the major party's primary ballots is beginning with caucuses across the state.

The caucuses will be held in every county in Colorado Tuesday. Members of both parties will select delegates to go to their Assemblies. Delegates will then vote for candidates to appear on the June 24 primary ballot.

The Democratic ticket is already set with Gov. John Hickenlooper and Sen Mark Udall up for re-election. Republican caucuses promise more drama as several candidates vie for the right to challenge Hickenlooper. Two major candidates are seeking the nomination against Udall.

Several Republican candidates are also trying to minimize the importance of caucuses. They are gathering petitions from each of the state's seven congressional districts to place themselves directly on the primary ballot.
