Colorado lawmakers are debating a bill that would punish people who kill a fetus while committing another crime, but opponents say it's an attempt to pave the way for a ban on abortion.

A state Senate committee is scheduled to review the bill Wednesday.

Supporters say the measure specifically protects doctors who perform abortions if their patients consent to the operation.

Opponents say the bill is the first step toward an abortion ban because it would give a fetus the legal status of a human being.
