Colorado Air Force reservists are in New Mexico ready to start airdrops on wildfires. 26 members of the 302nd Airlift Wing took off Tuesday morning from Peterson Air Force base in Colorado Springs to support firefighting efforts in the southwest.

The departure is also evidence of the size and intensity of firefighting efforts that have been going on for more than a month. Calling in the military typically happens only after all civilian resources are exhausted. Major Bo Shelton says, "When we're tasked that's when it's really getting deep and they want us in there helping them suppress these fires.

The reservists will set up Tuesday, and start air drops Wednesday.
