BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. (AP) - A Colorado National Guard officer has filed a federal lawsuit accusing a Wisconsin hospital of firing him because of an overseas deployment.
The lawsuit says David Merritt was a major in the National Guard and an emergency-room doctor at Black River Memorial Hospital in western Wisconsin.
He says when he returned from a deployment to Afghanistan in 2009, he told hospital officials he might be redeployed in February.
The suit says two months later hospital administrators escorted him from the building. Merritt says they sent a letter saying he'd been fired without cause.
Hospital spokeswoman Amy Yaeger tells the La Crosse Tribune the hospital just learned of the suit Friday and had no comment.
Merritt's lawsuit was filed Thursday. It seeks reinstatement at the hospital, back pay and other damages.
