Colo court expected to rule on school funding case

DENVER (AP) - The Colorado Supreme Court is expected to rule on a case that could have far-reaching implications for state education funding.

A decision is expected Tuesday in a lawsuit filed by parents and school districts challenging the funding system as unconstitutional.

The plaintiffs argue that students in low-income areas don't have equal access to technology and the latest curriculum. They say that violates the state constitution's requirement of a "thorough and uniform" education system.

Lawyers for the state say the courts should defer to the Legislature on school funding. They also say Colorado can't afford to increase funding to schools because education already takes up nearly half the general fund.

A district judge ruled last year the educational funding system is inadequate and that no district that is sufficiently funded.
