A college student from Colorado has died after falling out of a raft on the Piedra River in Archuleta County.

Sheriff's officials say 20-year-old Fort Lewis College student Robert Reiter, of Gypsum, was training as a river guide Friday when he fell from the raft and became trapped under a submerged log. Reiter was among 17 trainees on a familiarization tour with Southwest Whitewater.

The accident occurred in Second Box Canyon, an area inaccessible by foot. The Archuleta County search-and-rescue team recovered the body Saturday. Andy Corra of Four Corner River Sports in Durango said the flow through that stretch would be considered moderate.

He said guides must log 50 hours on rivers to become licensed.
