CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - A highly contagious virus that can kill
horses has forced the cancellation and postponement of some rodeos
and horse events throughout the West but others are going ahead.
The College National Finals Rodeo is scheduled in less than
three weeks in Wyoming and organizers plan to go ahead with the
event in Casper. The rodeo attracts teams from more than 100
colleges from around the nation and Canada that bring along up to
Roger Walters of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association
says he's not aware of any teams or contestants pulling out of the
State veterinarians are leaving it up to event organizers to
decide whether to cancel.
The Equine Herpes Virus-1 has infected dozens of horses in at
least 11 states and Canada. At least nine horses have died.
