Three people and a family dog made it out safely of an early morning house fire in Colorado Springs, but the family cat was killed in the blaze.
Colorado Springs Fire crews got the call around 2:30 a.m. to a home on Golden Hills Road, in the bluffs just north of Garden of the Gods Road; Capt. Robert Coffey with C.S.F.D. says they could see the flames from downtown.
Capt. Coffey says it looks like the fire may have started in the garage, but quickly spread to most of the rest of the home. They say because of the location of the home in the bluffs -- with few access points -- it was a tough fire to get their equipment to quickly.
Scott Lincoln, a neighbor who lives about a mile away, saw the flames from his home. He walked over and got footage of the fire; Lincoln says he had never seen one that big before; he had to move back because the heat from the home was very intense. Video from his cell phone showed flames as tall as the home itself billowing from the top of the home.
As of 4:00 a.m. the flames were out on the home, but crews were hanging around to make sure everything was out. Capt. Coffey says this is a reminder to everyone to have an emergency escape plan; it can save lives when seconds count.
