DENVER (AP) - A man who mangled a shopper's finger while stealing an iPad faces up to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty in the case.
The Denver District Attorney's office says 22-year-old Brandon Smith pleaded guilty Friday to aggravated robbery and second-degree assault in an agreement with prosecutors. The second-degree assault plea was in connection to allegations that after his arrest he tried to arrange to have the theft victim killed.
Authorities say Smith yanked a bag from a man's hand in a Denver shopping mall in April 2010. The man's left pinky was so badly mangled when it became entangled in a bag that part of it had to be amputated.
Smith faces between 15 and 25 years when is sentenced next month.
