Clinton shows solidarity, pledges more aid

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is promising U.S. support for the Philippines in its fight against al-Qaida-linked militants. She's arrived in Manila for a two-day visit. Her trip comes after the Philippine Senate passed a resolution urging the government to renegotiate a pact with the U.S. that lets about U.S. troops train and advise Filipino soldiers battling Abu Sayyaf militants. Filipino troops have been struggling to contain the militants, who have recently intensified attacks. In remarks today, Clinton hailed the military pact as an "important expression" of the two countries' mutual respect and mutual interest. Clinton has also been highlighting the U.S. military's role in helping the country recover from deadly typhoons. She's announced an extra $5 million in U.S. aid.
