Colorado Springs is installing another pedestrian-crossing signal at the intersection of 17th St. and Colorado Ave. They put in a similar signal light at the start of the year near Edison Elementary.
The goal of the signals, called hybrid pedestrian beacons, is to increase pedestrian safety and improve traffic flow. The beacons are dark when not in use, allowing traffic through and saving on energy costs. When a pedestrian activates the signal, the three lights flash yellow to warn drivers, then turns solid red to stop traffic and let the person cross. Finally the signal flashes red, indicating that drivers can go through, but must stop first to make sure the crosswalk is clear.
We'll be there this morning for the installation of this new signal light and will have more later.
