SALIDA, Colo. (AP) - Artist Christo plans to visit the Upper Arkansas River Valley this month to thank supporters of his proposed "Over the River" project, which would involve suspending a total of about six miles of fabric over sections along a 40-mile stretch of the Arkansas River.

Christo's visits to Salida on May 18 and Canon City on May 19 will be his first to the area without partner and wife Jeanne-Claude since her death in November. The couple first visited the area in 1997 to tell residents about the proposed exhibit, which would run for two weeks.

The Bureau of Land Management still has to issue a draft of potential environmental impacts of the proposal. The earliest the project could go up, if approved, is 2013.
