Childhood obesity rates begin to decrease

It looks like efforts to get kids to eat healthy and exercise are starting to work.
A new study shows childhood obesity rates are starting to go down across the nation for the first time in decades.
Still, Colorado is one of three states with a slight increase.
A new study from the centers for disease control and prevention tracked the height and weight of nearly twelve million low-income two to four year-olds.
"We've seen people rally together as a community and as the stakeholders in this battle against obesity," said Lindy Fenlason, a professor of pediatrics.
Between 2008 and 2011, obesity rates stayed the same or decreased in forty states and territories, and only went up slightly in three, one of those - Colorado. But it turns out we're still one of the lowest.
"Even though Colorado was 1% increased for child obesity overall it is actually the 2nd lowest percentage across the nation for childhood obesity," said Lisa McCarty with Metabolic Research Center in Colorado.
She says Hawaii is the only state with a lower rate than ours.
She offers some tips to help your children eat healthier.
"Get your children involved and have them sit down and help plan a healthy meal for the whole entire family and have them help cook the meal with the family, they're more likely to eat the healthy meal, she said.
Despite the encouraging results from the study, one in eight pre-schoolers is obese, which could set them up for health problems.
"Obesity is a disease, and it puts us at higher risk for other chronic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease," said Fenlason.
Experts say parents, teachers and even government leaders all played a role in getting us to this point and they are essential to keeping the momentum moving.
Ten states were not included in the study.
However, CDC experts say even if all ten had experienced an increase in kid obesity rates, the nation overall would still have experienced an improvement.
