Toddler dies after being hit by car on highway

A toddler who was hit by a car while walking in the middle of US 24 late Thursday night has died. Police say at around 9:25 p.m. a woman driving a small sedan hit the two year old as she was headed east on US 24 near Garrett Road.

It's estimated that the car was traveling at about 50 miles an hour.  Neither speed nor drug or alcohol are suspected in the case. The police say the driver was "very upset" following the accident.

There's no word yet on why the child was on the road. However, Sgt. Steven Biscaro of the Colorado Springs Police Department says that the child's family lives in a home that borders the roadway and that they were at home at the time of the accident.

Biscaro said other drivers who were passing by stopped to perform CPR on the child.  The two-year old died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

"I believe that there were some signs of life when [the child] arrived at the hospital but it was unable to sustain life after the trauma it sustained," Biscaro said.

The area where the accident happened is within city limits, but Biscaro says it is still a rural highway and not well lit.

"There's not the lighting that you'd find within the city limits," he said. "It's very dark, isolated and it's not easy to see, say animals in the road, let alone a small child."

Members of the police department's Major Accident Unit are investigating the accident and Eastbound US 24 is expected to be closed for several hours.
