Board members for Pueblo Child Advocacy Center say child abuse is on a sharp increase this fall. The center typically helps around 200 children a year, but in the past three months that number has doubled.

The center held a Run or Ride fundraiser Sunday morning at the Pueblo Memorial Airport. Walkers, cyclists and runners all came out for some exercise and to make a donation.

Board member Janice Williams can't say for sure that the economy is causing the spike in abuse, but she suspects it plays a big part.

"With the economy; parents are stressed, families are stressed, and a lot of times they take it out on the children," Williams said.

She is hoping to raise about $5,000 because, she says, every penny will be crucial this year.
