Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden told reporters Saturday, criminal charges will likely be filed in saga of boy who was believed to be in a balloon. Today Sheriff Alderden announced "significant progress" in the investigation after a second round of questioning.
"We do anticipate that at some point that there will be some charges filed with regards to this incident," Sheriff Alderden said to press on Saturday night.
Sheriff Alderden wouldn't comment on what those charges may be. Alderden did say Richard Heene and his wife Mayumi are not under arrest.
Charges could be filed against one or both of the parents.
Originally Sheriff Alderden said on Friday that if charges were filed, it would likely only be a class three misdemeanor for making a flase report. Saturday night Sheriff Alderden said that seems like hardly enough considering the circumstances. Alderden says he will consult with the District Attorney and federal agencies before anything official is charged.
Reports say Richard Heene was taken to the Sheriff's office on Saturday for questioning, Mayumi Heene arrived at the office a couple of hours later while the children were watched by Sheriff's deputies.
When the Heenes left the Larimer County Sheriff's Office Saturday night. Richard spoke briefly to the media saying that he and his wife were there to help with the process and that things were going well.
Richard Heene didn't respond to members of the media asking what he thought about charges possibly being filed.
This comes after Saturday morning when reporters were waiting on what Richard Heene described as a "big announcement" he was going to make. The announcement was that he was placing a box on his front porch for questions that he would answer at a press conference at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
No press conference happened at that time.
However, a press confrence of another type may be in the near future, one from the Larimer County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Alderden said Saturday night that they will likely hold one on Sunday.
