The Colorado Department of Transportation is warning drivers to brace for heavy traffic and long delays Sunday during one of the busiest weekends of the year for mountain winter enthusiasts. CDOT says major events such as the Winter X Games in Aspen and Military SnoFest in Keystone, as well as the lack of playoff football on television make this one of the busiest and most congested weekends of the year on I-70 in the high country. The following message was posted on CDOT's web site Saturday night:
"CDOT is anticipating an extremely heavy weekend for ski traffic. Due to multiple large attendance events in our mountain communities, combined with the off week for football, this weekend has historically proven to be one of the busiest of the season. CDOT is warning of the likelihood of long delays heading west Sunday morning. Returning traffic will be heavy going east beginning Sunday afternoon. CDOT encourages you to 'Change your Peak' and if possible, travel outside of the the peak times of 1 and 8 pm in the evening."
