The Colorado Bureau of Investigation will replace its aging fingerprint database system over the next several months.

The new system will provide for state of the art technologies and electronic devices to improve the ability of law enforcement and criminal justice agencies not only to identify criminal offenders, but also to exclude innocent people from suspicion.

With the new system, the C.B.I. will have the ability to compare palm prints and, in future years, will have the potential to have access more identifying characteristics, including using hand-held fingerprint units, and iris scans.

The project includes workstations at 15 Colorado local law enforcement agencies. It should be operational by January.
