What was once a staple in many kitchens, peanuts and peanut butter, are being shunned by more and more american families, as reports of food allergies skyrocket among children.

CDC researchers say new cases of reported food allergies increased by 18% over the past fifteen years. While visits to the ER for food allergy reactions nearly tripled.

2005 data show 9% of all kids, from toddlers to teens, had some type of peanut allergy. The research is based on parent reports of food allergies, not necessarily clinical diagnoses.

It's unclear whether there are more allergies, or simply more awareness of allergies.
