Cardboard, tape and physics: students race improbable boats

When it comes lessons in buoyancy, it's a sink or swim grade for students in Physics class at Doherty High School.

Teacher Jeremy Cipiti requires his students to design and build boats using only cardboard and clear packaging tape.

On Wednesday, the students launched their vessels in the Doherty pool for a Regatta style race.

In previous years, Cipiti allowed the students to use use duct tape to hold their boats together. He changed to postal packing tape this year to make the build more challenging.

"I think it's a good kind of advertisement for the class, getting a lot of kids to sign up for it that you know maybe otherwise wouldn't have signed up for it, but good to challenge themselves and take a class like physics," Cipiti said of the Regatta.

Several of the students also wore costumes and decorated their boats with a specific theme. While not required, Cipiti did award extra credit to those students for their extra participation.
